Success on winter fodder oat cultivation at Hailakandi, Assam
KVK Hailakandi in its endeavour to improve the availability of green fodder especially during winter season as there is scarcity of greens for feeding to animals in winter has encouraged the green fodder production in winter season by providing quality seed on OFT mode. Md. Sirajul Haque Mazumder of Kanchanpur P-II of Hailakandi block is in constant touch with KVK for suggestion and advice on dairy cattle management. Regarding green fodder availability and production in winter he has been suggested to grow fodder oat to make greens available during the lean period. The resources at his farm are found to be suitable for fodder production and he is having four milch cows of Holstein and Jersey cross
Intervention
The farmer was selected as one of the beneficiary for cultivation of fodder oat. The technology was demonstrated through OFT mode. KVK monitored the farm regularly and provided suggestions and recommendation through regular visits. In September, 2012, KVK demonstrated Oat (var. Kent) for green fodder production on the field of this farm. He has been provided with seeds and other minimum support like fertilizer. The area under fodder production of Oat (Var. Kent) was 0.13 ha.

Impact
The Oat variety provided to him was sown with lots of expectation. The quality and performance of Oat as fodder was realized by the farmer. The average production of green fodder yield was 23400, 29600 and 30000 Kg/ha. in 1st , 2nd and 3rd cuttings respectively, which not only helps in providing quality green fodder to his cattle during winter season, the production of milk increases and their health status were maintained. With support of KVK he has cultivated again in 2013 with expectation to harvest green fodder for feeding of his cattle. Small Scale dairy cattle owner on seeing the performance demanded for seeds for growing in their farms.
